Narcibusiness

By Xerex Faustino - Brand Designer/Consultant

Imagine meeting a person on a first date, opens a conversation with how great they are to just impress you. Expecting to win your attention by being self centered rather than winning you first by understanding your world or interest to make you feel comfortable. As horrible as it sounds, yes it is a very obvious demonstration of a very narcissistic behavior. Interestingly, most of these people meant no harm or have any evil intention or at-least awareness of this act. All they want is to either win a longer conversation or developing a relationship or trust.

Most people tend to fall into this behavior regardless of their educational, cultural, emotional and other factors that could get them to be at that certain situation. Maybe due to human impulsive nature due to mix-emotions like excitement, fear, confidence and impatience to just ensure an opportunity. This mostly happens to most men who meets a very beautiful woman especially on the first date either out of over excitement or lack of preparation.

This story metaphor gave me an insight that could be interesting to business owners and entrepreneurs. Where we feel more confident the more we do all preparations to eventually launch our business.

This situation could be compared to the way we approach our business introduction to costumers. Due to extreme level of mix emotions like excitement to start, fear of the risk, confidence of intention, or lack of patience due to limited resource like time, budget and knowledge on how to launch a business. We work so hard to ensure all our efforts for production, construction, budget, hiring, logistics, plus gazillion of all other stuff that might be so overwhelming. But sadly we fall to this similar situation where we talk like narcissist focusing on ourself, ideas, photography, product, logo, hard-work that get us so exited to see the fruit of our labor like selling and profit. While forgetting the first date principle to win a better conversation is to engage customers by first understanding their needs instead of yourself or your business.

Maybe, this is a kind of question we wanna ask first before launching our new business.
Am I starting a narcibusiness? Or what shall I do to effectively win trust of my customers?
